Following the discovery of type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus in sewage in north and east London, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that a targeted inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) booster dose should be offered to all children between the ages of 1 and 9 in all London boroughs.
This was announced to GP practices at the same time as the public and so how these boosters will be delivered is still being organised.
More information about why these boosters are being offered can be found here.

Children Aged 6-9 Years Old
If your child is aged 6+ AND have completed their standard vaccine schedule then they should have a booster at one of the vaccine centres being set up. Westfield has already started booking with more sites to open soon. We messaged the eligible patients but are not able to provide the vaccine to this group of patients due to our capacity.
To book a Polio booster for children aged 6-9 with a complete vaccine schedule only – click here for Westfield.

Children Aged Under 5 Years Old with Incomplete Vaccinations
If your child is aged under 5 and has an incomplete standard Polio vaccination schedule we will be inviting you in to the practice to catch up. Please wait for your invite text before contacting us so that we can manage capacity. We are trialling a new system that will allow you to book an appointment via the invite text message however if you have any problems please call and speak to reception who can book the appointment for you.
To book a Polio booster for children aged under 5 with an incomplete vaccine schedule only – wait for your invite to book which can be done via the SMS invite or by calling reception.
Children Who Don’t Need a Booster
If your child completed their standard Polio vaccination schedule i.e. had their Pre School Booster in the last 12 months then they do not need a booster. We have already messaged the relevant people to let them know that they don’t need to do anything.
Children NOT Covered by the Above Categories
Discussions are still ongoing about how the small amount of children who don’t fall in to the above categories will be offered the vaccine. We will be updating our website and contacting people when we know more. Thank you for your patience.
