Contraception

The Tredegar Practice offers access to a variety of contraception including:

  • the combined oral contraception pill (COCP) also known more simply as the pill
  • contraceptive coils – both IUCD & IUS (currently a reduced service due to COVID-19)

Local sexual health services also provide a range of contraception services including:

  • contraceptive coils – both IUCD & IUS
  • contraceptive implants

See  here for general information on the various methods of contraception including their relative advantages and disadvantages

Contraceptive Pill

New – if you have not had the contraceptive pill before please message us via Accurx Triage and we will discuss this with you.

Ongoing Contraceptive Pill Prescriptions

Before we can provide more of your contraceptive pill we need to do a pill check: this normally happens once a year and involves a blood pressure check and a few safety questions. If you are happy with your pill and there are no issues raised by your answers we should just be able to give you another prescription for 1 year (made up of 2x 6 month batches) without an appointment with a GP or nurse.

Please call reception and schedule a time to use our SurgeryPod to check your blood pressure and answer a few questions. These will be passed on and a prescription will be ready in 24 working hours. The prescription can be sent straight to your chemist if you like.

Please note that GPs across Tower Hamlets do not prescribe the contraceptive pill Yasmin to patients because of associated increased health risks.

Contraceptive Coils

Due to COVID-19 we are not providing new contraceptive coils unless they are to help with a wider gynaecological related issue. Please contact local sexual health services for other options.
