People are understandably concerned about the news of Polio being found in the London Sewage system. Polio is rare and the risk to the public overall is extremely low.
The majority of Londoners are fully protected against Polio and won’t need to take any further action, but the NHS will begin reaching out to parents of children aged under 5 in London who are not up to date with their Polio vaccinations to invite them to get protected.
Meanwhile, parents can also check their child’s vaccination status in their Red Book and people should contact us to book a vaccination, should they or their child not be fully up to date. If your child is in the middle of their vaccines do not worry and note we will not be able to give vaccines early as they will not be effective.
If you had your complete childhood vaccinations then you should not be at risk. There is no need for a booster and protection is for life.
